Duval Claims First Pro Title; Duke's Goldfeld Wins Collegiate Invitational Shootout; Bellis, Ponwith Champions at Evert ITF

No. 7 seed Vicky Duval won her first professional singles title today at the $50,000 Challenger in Toronto. The 17-year-old from Florida, who was the USTA junior champion in 2012, took the winner's trophy when top seed Timea Babos of Hungary retired trailing 7-5.  Duval, playing in only the second pro singles final in her career, also won the doubles title on Saturday with 16-year-old Francoise Abanda of Canada.

At the $50,000 New Braunfels, Texas Challenger, Anna Tatishvili of Georgia, who trains at the Evert Academy in Boca Raton, captured her third singles title in four weeks, and reached the final in the one tournament she didn't win.  Tatishvili, the No. 6 seed, beat unseeded Elitsa Kostova of Bulgaria 6-4, 6-4, and will be back in the WTA Top 100 in no time with this level of play.  She is entered in the $50,000 tournament in Captiva Island, Florida this coming week, but that's a whole lot of tennis in a five-week stretch, so she's certainly earned a break if she needs one.  She and CoCo Vandeweghe won the doubles title in Texas too, defeating Taylor Townsend and Asia Muhammad 3-6, 6-3, 13-11.

At the men's $75,000 Charlottesville Challenger, Michael Russell pulled off one of the most impressive comebacks of the year to beat Canadian Peter Polansky 7-5, 2-6, 7-6(5). Russell, the No. 3 seed, trailed 5-0 in the third set and 5-2 in the tiebreaker, yet somehow managed to beat the Tiburon Challenger champion.  In the doubles final, Steve Johnson and Tim Symczek defeated Donald Young and Jarmere Jenkins 6-4, 6-3.

At the $10,000 Futures in Pensacola, Benjamin Balleret of Monaco beat Eric Prodon of France 6-3, 7-6(1) for the singles championship. The pair will meet in the first round of the $10,000 Futures this coming week in Niceville.

Patrick Daciek (Virginia Tech) and Joe Cadogan (Florida Atlantic) won the doubles title, beating Sekou Bangoura Jr. (Florida) and Devin McCarthy(Ohio State) 6-2, 2-6, 10-3.

Duke's Ester Goldfeld, Jamie Ashworth, Hanna Mar
At the USTA Collegiate Invitational in Portland, Duke's Ester Goldfeld won the wild card shootout, beating teammate Hanna Mar 11-9.  Goldfeld receives a wild card into the main draw of a USTA Pro Circuit event for winning the shootout.

Three USTA juniors made it to the shootout, winning their round robin groups: Samantha Hampton, Jada Hart and Bess Waldram. Of the three, only Waldram reached the semifinals. Below are the final results from this morning's round robin play and the shootout. I don't know why Michigan's Emina Bektas, who was 3-0 in Group A, didn't participate in the shootout, with Nebraska's Maggy Lehmicke taking her place.

Re: Why Bektas didn't play in the shootout:
Michigan had flight issues so needed to leave.
