Texas Edges A & M for Men's Big 12 Tournament Title, Northwestern Women Blank Michigan for Big Ten Title; Pro Circuit Update

Ed Corrie of Texas defeated Texas A & M's Jeff Dadamo at No. 2 singles to give the Longhorns the Big 12 men's conference title today in Austin. Texas lost the doubles point, but was able to get quick wins at No. 1 and No. 5 singles to take the lead. They didn't trail after that, but the Aggies kept it close before falling to Texas for the third time this season. The complete results are available at the Texas athletics website, and I'm sure there will be more from Texas College Tennis on that match and on the less dramatic 4-0 win by Baylor over Texas in the women's final.

In the Big Ten, the Ohio State men beat Illinois in the conference final for the fifth straight year, taking a 4-1 victory. The Northwestern women beat Michigan for the sixth straight time in the Big Ten tournament final, but the scenario was a bit different this year, as the Wildcats had lost the regular season conference title to the Wolverines and were the No. 2 seeds coming in. Although there were close matches still on the courts, Northwestern won 4-0 to avenge their 4-3 loss to Michigan in April.

In other conference finals, both TCU teams won bids to the NCAA with tournament wins, with the men beating San Diego State 4-3, with the women beating the same opponent by the same score. In the MAC, the Miami of Ohio women defeated Western Michigan 4-1.

In the WAC, Hawaii and Fresno State are still playing for the men's title. Boise State's women won their first tournament, defeating Fresno State 4-3.

In the Pro Circuit, two tournaments concluded today, while three others featured qualifying. Michaela Krajicek of the Netherlands won the $50,000 tournament in Charlottesville, Va. and Karlis Lejnieks of Latvia won the $10,000 men's tournament in Vero Beach. Denis Kudla and Alex Domijan both reached the semifinals. In qualifying for the upcoming women's $50,000 in Indian Harbour Beach, Shelby Rogers beat Alina Jidkova, the top seed in qualifying, 6-0, 4-2 retired. Maria Belaya, Kristie Ahn, Valeria Solovieva and Tammy Hendler also advanced to the second round of qualifying.

In the $50,000 Savannah, Ga. Challenger, Daniel Kosakowski was given a main draw wild card and will face Bobby Reynolds at 10:30 on Monday morning. In the $10,000 Orange Park Futures, several juniors have reached the final round of qualifying. Bjorn Fratangelo will play Spencer Newman for a spot in the main draw. Junior Ore, Kurt Thein and Terrell Celestine also need only one more win to get into the main draw.

For all draws and results, see the Pro Circuit page at usta.com.

At a $15,000 event in Australia, 16-year-old Jason Kubler won his first ITF Men's Circuit match and went all the way to the finals as a qualifer before falling to top seed Brydan Klein 6-3, 6-4. For other Challenger and Futures results, see the ATP website.
